Fryd Purple Pop Rocks is one of the most famous and iconic candies in the world. It all started with a simple experiment in 1956 by a food chemist working at General Foods. He was trying to make a carbonated version of Kool-Aid.
He made a tablet that would instantly turn your water into a soda like beverage. What he didn’t know was that this was the first step in a huge adventure that would last 20 years and change the way we think about candy forever!
The original flavor was Cherry but since then they have come out with a large variety of flavors such as Grape, Green Apple, Strawberry, Watermelon, and Blue Razz. They also have seasonal flavors such as Chocolate, Pumpkin Patch Orange, and Candy Cane.
There were a lot of people that were worried about the effects of these candies. Some even believed that they could cause your stomach to explode if you mixed them with soda!
This rumor was so scary that General Foods actually wrote 50,000 letters to schools to assure kids that these candies were not dangerous and they were safe for children. They updated product information forms, gave new marketing material to their sales team and even had a full page advertisement in 45 major publications!
In spite of the controversy that this rumor created, Mikey from the Life cereal commercials still liked Pop Rocks. He is alive and well and has never commented on the rumors about his exploding stomach.
